Abstract (AB):
This document from the World Health Organization (WHO) identifies challenges posed in monitoring the safety of herbal medicines effectively and proposes approaches for overcoming them. Attention is given to the reporting system for adverse reactions to herbal medicines and to analysis of the causes of reported adverse reactions. The guidelines discuss safety monitoring of herbal medicines in pharmacovigilance systems, pharmacovigilance and the WHO international drug monitoring program, challenges in monitoring the safety of herbal medicines, and communication. The guidelines include a selected bibliography, model reporting form, and proposed database management and classification system for coding herbal products. 10 references.
