Abstract (AB):
This book from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) describes a framework for evaluating the safety of dietary supplements that was drafted for the Food and Drug Administration by the IOM and the National Research Council of the National Academies. This framework is a process for prioritizing, evaluating, and describing available information to establish the risk of harm of dietary supplement ingredients; it includes a set of science-based principles that serve as guidelines for evaluating risk to human health. The book considers methods other expert bodies have used to categorize and review supplement safety and efficacy issues; and considers the scientific evidence from human, animal, and in vitro studies, and on related substances. The book also examines major concerns about the safety of dietary supplement ingredients and interactions with drugs, other dietary supplements, and foods. It examines vulnerable groups, the prevalence of supplement use, scientific principles for integrating and evaluating the available data, and application of the framework using case studies. The book includes findings, recommendations, and 13 appendices.
