Abstract (AB):
This PDQ statement provides information about a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatment called Newcastle disease virus (NDV), which is used for cancer. It gives general information about NDV, including the various strains of the virus, the differences among these strains, and their use as a CAM treatment for cancer. The history of its discovery is traced and the possible mechanisms of action are described. The statement also provides details about results from a wide variety of studies of NDV, including laboratory, animal, preclinical, and human/clinical studies. The adverse effects of NDV are listed after the scientific evidence. The statement concludes with a ranking of the overall level of evidence for NDV. A Glossary of Terms is included. 98 references.
